Classes are held at the Yacht Club in Kennebunkport. Sailing takes place both inside and outside the beautiful Kennebunk River. Beginners build confidence sailing inside the basin . The experienced sailors practice and race outside the river in front of Gooches Beach. The goal of the program is to insure students have a safe and fun summer experience built around developing good sportsmanship and learning the skills of sailing.
Classes
Beginners
Beginner’s classes (Beginner 1 is for first time sailors, Beginner 2 is for returning sailors) will be offered for those children (6yrs – 10yrs) with little or no sailing experience. Classes will be held 2 times a week for 3-hour sessions in the river basin. Children entering this class must pass a swim test and be comfortable in and around the water. Emphasis is placed on having fun while learning the basics of sailing, sailing terminology, knot tying, rigging the Opti’s and wind speed/direction.
Intermediates
An intermediate class will be offered for those children who have successfully completed the beginner’s program and are ready to advance their skills. Students in this class will sail individually in the Opti’s in the ocean off Gooches Beach. Student should be very confident in their sailing abilities and comfortable in the open waters.
Advanced
An advanced class will be offered for older children and those who have completed the intermediate class. Students must have some sailing experience to attend this class. The Class will utilize both the Opti’s and 420 boats. Classes will be held off Gooches beach. This class will focus on competitive racing, and travel to other clubs to race. The class will be held 3 times per week. 2 four hour classes, one day of travel racing. Parents are expected to help on travel day with driving.
