2004 Boon Island Race

Perfect, perfect, perfect is the only way to describe the AYC 2004 Boon Island Race held on 24 June 2004. The sky was clear, steady wind at 15+/- knots out of the Southwest, and clear to the horizon. With Boon Island in sight at the start, there was no confusion as to what direction to sail.
Thanks to Bob Burns on Hart’s Rock a perfect starting line was set and all boats safely crossed the line healing to Port. Kanaloa and Voodoo quickly tacked and headed inland for what seemed like serious misjudgment of how to get to Boon Island. All other boats stayed on their Port tack and were convinced they were dead-on the island. One hour into the race the wind shifted slightly to the south and now Kanaloa and Voodoo were well in the lead and the rest of the fleet struggled to hold any course that resembled Boon Island.
A fleet of seven boats made their way around the island and across the finish line with the last boat recording 5:49:00 of sailing time. Three AYC boats and four visiting boats from Cape Porpoise to Saco made the event a success.
With the help of Chris Audley and Dave Hall on Riptide at the finish line the corrected times resulted in the following:
