2003 Boon Island Race
RACE RESULTS
 |
With only a short 10 minute delay, the scheduled 21 June 2003 Boon Island Race actually took place on 21 June 2003. Morning Star required a few extra minutes to make it down from Cape Porpoise; otherwise it was a perfect start. Clear sky, 10 +/- knots wind from the South East, and eight registered boats.
The start was perfect with all boats over the line within 30 seconds of each other. As observed from the flying bridge of Bob Scribner’s trawler, Clairrann II, the sight was something to behold. All sails filled and healing to starboard each boat reached for Boon Island as if it were only yards away.
Unfortunately, the air weakened one hour later, and it was a slow drift to the Island. Four hours later the first boat, VooDoo from Saco rounded the Island and was now in a race to finish before the 6.5 hour time limit. At about this time, the first of three skippers turned on their engines and call in a DNF (did not finish) and motored home.
With five boats left in the race, the committee boat finally observed the lead boat headed for the finish line at approximately 18:00 hours. With corrected time the results were as follows:

VooDoo Kanaloa Aries
 |
Jake Mahoney Mark Tuller John Lamb
 |
6:08:52 6:28:14 7:15:53

With eight entries, and four regulars who had other commitments, this event has the promise to grow to a sizable fleet in the future.
A hardy thanks to Bob Scribner for supplying the committee boat.
